Homecoming
On Sunday, August 22, 2010, New Hope
Presbyterian Church was honored to have as
guest speaker, Dr. Ellen Davis, Amos Ragan
Kearns Distinguished Professor of Bible and
Practical Theology at Duke University. She
holds degrees from University of California,
Berkeley; Oxford University; Divinity School
of the Pacific and Yale University. She is
the author of eight books and many articles.
She has long been involved in inter-faith
dialogue and works with the Episcopal Church
of Sudan to develop theological education,
community health and sustainable
agriculture.
Her research interest
focuses on the impact of biblical
interpretation on the life of faith
communities and their response to critical
public issues, particularly the environment
and interfaith relations. Her most recent
book, Scripture, Culture, and Agriculture:
An Agrarian Reading of the Bible (Cambridge
University Press, 2009) integrates biblical
studies with a critique of industrial
agriculture and food production.
For
New Hope Presbyterian Church, founded by
farmers searching for ideal agricultural
land, until recently was primarily attended
by local farm families, and now engaged in
preservation of the adjacent land through
the camp, Dr. Ellen Davis was an ideal
choice for our Homecoming speaker. Her
sermon topic was Exodus 16. Photos from the Homecoming
